Learning is a hands-on Experience at Skokie Chabad Hebrew School!

This past Sunday, eager students visited Jewel Osco in Evanston for an interactive lesson about Kashrut.

The children took tour of all the different kosher counters in the store, and at each stop they discussed practical details of a kosher lifestyle. At the Kosher Pier fish counter, the braver of the students held and examined fish to identify both fins and scales, both necessary signs of a kosher fish. At the meat and deli areas, the student learned more information about the process that takes a kosher animal from the farm to the meat counter, and neatly packaged and priced meats. The kosher bakery counter was pretty tasty; students watched a cake decorator work her magic on a custom confection, and sampled kosher cookies. Rabbi Blaustein, the mashgiach, answered the many questions that children had.

Thank you to the staff at Jewel Osco, and to Rabbi Blaustein, for a great field trip! Share the word: Skokie Chabad Hebrew School provides a stimulating environment where Jewish children happily embrace their heritage, no matter their level of observance or affiliation. You can see pictures from the fieldtrip on the website, www.SkokieHebrewSchool.org

Siyum HaRambam

In the spring of 1984, the Rebbe called for an innovative addition to the daily study schedule of every Jewish man, woman and child. He suggested that everyone study a portion of Maimonides' compendium of Jewish law, known as the Mishneh Torah or simply as Rambam. To read more about the cycle of daily study of Rambam, read here.

Almost a year has passed since last year’s 30th Siyum HaRambam, when so many of us joined in the festivities and joined the expanding circle of Rambam learners.

The 31st cycle of learning Rambam will be completed in a few short weeks.  This year's Siyum HaRambamwill take place Wednesday evening 26 Shevat (February 6) at the Lubavitch Mesivta of Chicago with special guest, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Wolberg, of the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Manchester, England.
