Coffee, Cake, Candy, and…Sushi? Shavuot All-Night Learning

This Tuesday, the first night of Shavuot, the custom is to stay up all night learning Torah. Please join us for the All-Night Study, with several classes that build on each other and make for a meaningful evening. Enticing refreshments and a splendid coffee bar will be available to keep you perky all night long.

Schedule:

11:30 pm – 12:30 am - Rabbi Posner 
Topic: When? 
When was actually was Matan Torah? Explore the quirks of our calendar and discover that Matan Torah probably didn’t happen at the time you think it did. Amaze your friends with the intimate knowledge you will have regarding the timing of this historic event.

12:40 am – 1:40 am – Rabbi Yochanan 
Topic: What? 
What did the Jewish people actually eat in the desert? Study up on the reasons that we eat dairy on Shavuos. What are the origins and parameters of this minhag?

1:50 am – 2:50 am – Rabbi Raices 
Topic: Why? 
Why do we stay up all night on Shavuot anyway? What could have possibly happened in the desert to necessitate us not sleeping thousands of years later?

3:00 am – 4:00 am – Rabbi Posner – bonus class.

Ten Commandments

The Lubavitcher Rebbe encourages every Jewish child, even the very young, to be present at the Torah-Reading of the Ten Commandments on Shavuos morning. MAKE SURE TO BE THERE, with your kids, on time! The children’s program fun & games begin at 10:00 am, with special prizes for those who are present at 10:00 a.m. We will bring all the children in to shul for that part of Torah reading.

Kids’ Shavuot Ice Cream Party

Children's Shavuot Ice Cream Party – who doesn’t love a good party with great games!? We have a fun program going on on Wednesday, first day of Shavuot, beginning at 10 am with special prizes for any child there on time!We will bring the children in to shul for Aseret Hadibrot (Ten Commandments) and then continue their special program, including ice cream for all kids.

Shavuot Dairy Kiddush

There will be a gourmet dairy Kiddush after davening on Wednesday, beginning at about 11:30 a.m., with lasagna, cheesecake, and other delicious foods (some food will be pareve). This is a great opportunity for sponsorship.

Skokie Festival of Cultures

The Skokie Fair of Cultures is next Sunday, May 19, and we will have a table there. Last year we really had a great time with the throngs of visitors who came over to chat about Scribal Arts and about Yiddishkeit in general. Please volunteer to be present at our exhibit! Men’s Breakfast and Learning Report

This past Sunday’s men’s breakfast was a great breakfast and the presentation by Rabbi Posner on “When property rights conflict with the right to life?” was quite interesting. Audio is available by contacting the office. We thank the committee members Brian Alexander, Yehuda Leib Burgeman, Evan Loiterman, Hiam Naiditch, Rob Phillips, Dr. Berel Polisky, and Steve Rosenberg, for planning and executing this program.

Keep The Money Rolling In … In the Box

We recently mailed out cardboard pop-up charity boxes. We have already received checks in return.The main idea is to keep the box in a visible, handy place and put something in every day. Introduction to Chassidus –The Third Course Begins ThisWeek

The first two Chassidus courses with Rabbi Moshe Miller at Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie were very enjoyable learning experiences for all of the participants. You are invited to attend the next course in this series.

This course will focus on the overall topic of “Tzimtzum”.

We will trace the origin of the subject to a posuk in Torah; elaborate its meaning, logic and how it is connected with other concepts in Torah and Chassidus; discuss different understandings of the concept by different authorities.

Basic familiarity with Hebrew reading and translating required. This course is ideal for individuals who have some experience with learning Chassidus, whether it is simply attending shiurim at a Shul or a Chabad House, or even yeshiva graduates. Men and women are welcome.

This six week Chassidus course with Rabbi Moshe Miller will begin on this Sunday, May 12, 2013, and will meet on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie 4059 Dempster Street.

Tuition for this course is $60. Study materials are included, and there will be homework assignments and mini tests so you can monitor your progress and your retention of the material.

This Shabbos marks Forty-Six Days for Sefiras Ha’Omer.

We do not say Tachnun all of the coming week, and the following week through Tuesday.

Shavuos begins Tuesday evening.

Yizkor will be said on Thursday, the Second Day of Shavuous, at approx. 10:45 a.m.

For Havdalah after Yom Tov, we do the same as after Shabbos except that we do not use a candle or spices.
