Chai Elul Farbrengen This Week |
A special farbrengen for men will be held in Shul this Motzai Shabbos, September 17, at 8:30 p.m. in honor of Chai Elul. The farbrengen will be led by special guest Rabbi Sholom Meir Hecht and is being sponsored by Moshe and Alexandra Melton in honor of their sons’ birthday(s). For more information, contact Rabbi Yochanan Posner or Rabbi Raices.

Park Bench Update |
Pledges are coming in for the benches we would like to install in front of the Shul building for people to sit on and relax on during these pleasant days. This would certainly add to the comfortable atmosphere and experience of attending Shul. Please help us meet our fundraising goal of $2,000 for two benches, which will be installed by the Village of Skokie. For more info please be in touch with Rabbi Yochanan.

High Holiday Information |
In preparation for the forthcoming High Holidays, here is some of what will be going on:
We are once again offering an Interpretative High Holiday service on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The service follows the traditional format and includes explanations, narration and insights that help make for a more meaningful davening experience. Try it out, and spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested.
ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES
There are many local families in our own community that need assistance with the additional Yom Tov expenses. 100% of your contribution goes to help these families. You can give/mail your check to Rabbi Posner to distribute to those in need.
HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES
While we generally do not assign seats, it is helpful if we know how many people to prepare for. Let us know that you intend to be here, and whether you will have guests. If you expect to be away, that would useful knowledge for us as well. As you know, we do not charge, but donations are always welcome at www.SkokieChabad.org/donate.
You can see the calendar for scheduled davening times here:
CHILDREN
We will have quality children’s programming on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, commensurate with our superlative year-round programming. The schedule for kids’ programs will be posted in next week’s news, and in the hallway and in the children’s room during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
Please bear in mind the longer hours of davening, and the many things going on in Shul over the Yamim Tovim. As always, you know your child best. Plan accordingly, and be flexible to their needs! If you bring a child to shul, understand that you may need to keep an eye on him/her. Please encourage and make sure that s/he participates in the appropriate children’s program, and understands that frequent “visits” to the shul may be disturbing to people trying to daven.
SHOFAR HOUSECALLS
If you know of anyone who is homebound and cannot be in Shul to hear Shofar, please let us know and we will try to arrange a house call. If you would like to volunteer to blow shofar, please let us know that as well
ROSH HASHANAH L'YISRAELIM
Rabbi Menachem Slavaticki and the Chabad Israeli Center will be holding Rosh Hashanah services geared towards the Israeli community. We are happy to be hosting them in 4049.
KAPPAROT
We will have chickens available for Kapparot on Tuesday, October 4, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The cost is $13.50 per chicken and the proceeds go to help needy families with Yom Tov expenses. Advance reservations are required.

Simchas Torah Seudah Lunch |

Timely Reminders |
To read about customs and practices for the Jewish month of Elul, click here
Shabbos is the 18th of Elul – Chai Elul - which is the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov (in 5458/1698) and of the Alter Rebbe (in 5545/1745). Elul is a month devoted to stocktaking and introspection, and a Chassidic tradition holds that the last twelve days of the year — Elul 18 to 29 — are specifically devoted to the twelve months of the closing year; on each of these twelve days, one should review the deeds and achievements of its corresponding month. You can read more about Chai Elul here.
Next Motzai Shabbos, Sept. 24, we begin reciting Selichos. The first Selichos will be at 12:40 a.m. on Saturday night. Monday and Tuesday, Selichos will be at 6:05 a.m., and Wednesday, Erev Rosh Hashanah at 5:50 a.m.
