News and Announcements

Reserve now for Kaparot

We will have live chickens available for Kaparot on Tuesday, October 4, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The cost is $13.50 per chicken and the proceeds go to help needy families with Yom Tov expenses. We must have reservations before Shabbos. Indicate how many males and females you need.

To read more about Kaparot, go to www.skokiechabad.org/407513

We Have the right Rosh Hashanah Service for you

Whatever your personal style of davening or praying, you’re bound to find what you’re looking for at Chabad.

The Interpretive Service is on the lower level, and features  explanations, narration and insights that help make for a more meaningful davening experience. This is great whether you’re an old hand looking for a way to make things fresh, or somewhat less initiated. Try it out, and spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested.

For the teenagers, the place to be is with Rabbi Chaim, who will be davening downstairs with The Jewish Youth House / Shul Club .

Israeli, or favor an Israeli-style Tefilah? Join Rabbi Menachem Slavaticki. The Chabad Israeli Center will be holding Rosh Hashanah services geared towards the Israeli community and we are happy to be hosting them in 4049. Of course, for those most comfortable in the traditional style of davening, just stick around in the main shul.

While we generally do not assign seats, it is helpful if we know how many people to prepare for. Let us know that you intend to be here, and whether you will have guests. If you expect to be away, that would useful knowledge for us as well. As you know, we do not charge, but donations are always welcome at www.SkokieChabad.org/donate.

You can see the calendar for scheduled davening times here.

Help Your Neighbor have a Sweet New Year

There are many local families in our own community that struggle with daily expenses. They certainly need assistance with the additional expenses of celebrating Yom Tov! 100% of your contribution goes to help these families. You can give/mail your check to Rabbi Posner to distribute to those in need.

Children’s Program for High Holidays

We are working hard to prepare quality children’s programming for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, commensurate with our superlative year-round programming. This includes updating and replacing some of the toys, allowing for more space, and great games and groups.

We will have some snacks available for Rosh Hashana, and will be serving lunches to the children on Yom Kippur. Please let us know if your child will be joining us for lunch, and any other information we should know.

The schedule for Rosh Hashana is:
9:00 am – 10:30 am: Kids’ Room open for supervised play
10:30 am – 11:30 am (or Shofar blowing): Groups by ages, snacks available for youngest children.
11:30 am (or after Shofar blowing)– 1:30 pm (or davening end): Kids’ Room + extended play room open, snacks available.

Please bear in mind the longer hours of davening, and the many things going on in Shul over the Yamim Tovim. As always, you know your child best. Plan accordingly, and be flexible to their needs! If you bring a child to Shul, understand that you may need to keep an eye on him/her. Please encourage and make sure that s/he participates in the appropriate children’s program, and be mindful of other people’s Shul experience.

Fulfill a Daily Mitzvah Easily

The Keren Hashana  fund, established by the Rebbe, disburses Tzedakah before Shacharis and before Mincha every day. By contributing to this fund, you are assured that you are giving Tzedakah twice daily. This year has 354 days, so you may want to give multiples of $7.08 (2 times a day x 354 days). You can give for each member of your family. Include Hebrew names and Hebrew names of the mother for each person participating. You can participate in this special fund via our secure website over here.

Last Call for Sukkot Orders

Get your kosher Lulav and Esrog from your favorite providers! It is essential that you place your order before Shabbos to find your perfect match.

We can also arrange for evergreen Schach or bamboo mats, delivered to your home. Just click here to order.

Kiddush Sponsorship Price Rising

The price for sponsoring a standard Kiddush is going up. With the start of the New Year standard Kiddush sponsorship will be $300. Co-sponsorships at lesser amount are still available, of course.
The price for sponsorship has not been changed in over 10 years, and meanwhile the costs have steadily increased. We thank all of the volunteers who contribute their time and energy, and the vendors who discount their prices and help make sponsoring a Kiddush affordable. And of course we thank the generous sponsors.
To sponsor a Kiddush, please contact Rabbi Raices. To volunteer to make the cholent, please contact Rob Phillips. To volunteer to make salads, please contact Mrs. Raices.

Park Bench Update

Pledges are coming in for the benches we would like to install in front of the Shul building for people to sit on and relax on during these pleasant days. This would certainly add to the comfortable atmosphere and experience of attending Shul. Please help us meet our fundraising goal of $2,000 for two benches, which will be installed by the Village of Skokie. We have reached 25% of our goal so far. For more info please be in touch with Rabbi Yochanan.

Plan WAAAY Ahead for End of Sukkot/Simchas Torah

As we do every year, we will have a communal Simchas Torah lunch on 10/21. The food is always great and the atmosphere even better. After a long week of celebrating Sukkot with delicious home-cooked foods, this might just be the ticket! This meal was founded and organized for many years by Manny Scheer, a”h.

This meal is by reservation only – reserve here: http://www.skokiechabad.org/1613759

This year (again) we will have “3-day Yom Tov”, when Shabbat comes immediately following Simchat Torah. So, to hold on to the festive spirit, Shabbat Kiddush on 10/22 (Parshat Bereishit) will be a washing kiddush. Plan accordingly!

Jewish Youth House Report

The Jewish Youth House had a very busy week preparing for Rosh Hashana!

The boys enjoyed pizza and learned about the meaning behind the blowing of the Shofar, They then had a chance to try it out and blow the Shofar themselves. We’ve got some real talent!

The girls enjoyed pizza as they learned about the great impact Rosh Hashana has on the rest of the year, and how important every moment of it is.

Thanks to Main Pizza/Chalavi for the hot and delicious pizza!
This Rosh Hashanah, the Shul Club will be davening downstairs together with Rabbi Chaim.
[Y2]

From everyone at the Jewish Youth House, we’d like to wish you a Ketivah Vachatima Tova -a sweet, happy & healthy New Year!

Mazal Tovs

We extend a hearty Mazal Tov to Boruch and Shira Margolis in Yerushalayim on the birth of a daughter Tanya Batsheva last Shabbos. May they have much Yiddishe, Chassidishe Nachas!

We thank Mike Fisher, Yankel Raices, Marc Shudnow and Rabbi Chaim Telsner for setting up for the Chai Elul Farbrengen.

We thank Avi Belson, Mordechai Gutkovsky, Steve Rosenberg and Marc Shudnow for building the Sukkahmobiles.

Thank you to Mrs. Rivkie Raices and Mrs. Ellyn Scheer for preparing the kiddush salads this week.
