1)  TIMES, DATES, ETC.

Candlelighting..........................7:54 p.m.
Latest Morning Krias Shma...............9:18 a.m. approx.
Shabbos ends............................9:01 p.m.

We are now in the "Nine Days." During the Nine Days we enter a period of more intense mourning for the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. In addition to the restrictions of the Three Weeks, we do not eat meat or drink wine, do laundry, bathe for pleasure, launder, etc. On Shabbos we avoid all signs of mourning, but do not eat fruits requiring a "Shehecheyanu." In addition to the Rebbe’s call for increased acts of Ahavas Yisrael and studying those parts of Torah which discuss building the Bais Hamikdash, such as Navi Yecheskel beginning Ch. 40, Rambam Hilchos Bais Habechira, etc. during the Three Weeks, during the Nine Days the Rebbe encourages the making of Siyumim so the permitted Simcha can ameliorate the limitations on Simcha during this time.

2) WHAT CAN WE DO?

Find out what we can do to make a difference in the crisis facing Israel. Read more by clicking on this link.

If you want to provide financial support to our brethren and sisters in this very difficult time, Chabad is reaching out and providing assistance in numerous ways. For example, Colel Chabad is focusing much of its efforts on badly hit Tzfat, budgeting $225,000 for the coming week. You can read more about this and contribute towards this monumental effort by clicking here.

You can read more stories about Chabad helping out all around the country at www.israelhomefront.com and www.chabadisrael.com. (This is obviously not like the Tsunami, where Chabad of Thailand was the single address for everything. This is Israel with millions of Jews affected and many Jewish organizations in place trying to help.)

Find it confusing? Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie is collecting money locally, bundling it and forwarding it according to donors’ preferences or where we think it will accomplish the greatest good. You can send us your checks and indicate your preference.

3) HUNDREDS GIVE THEIR ARMS FOR ISRAEL

This past Sunday, there was a rally for Israel in Skokie, and our volunteers were in attendance. Many hundreds of people donned tefillin in support of Israel and to offer added protection for our fellow Jews there.

An organizer of the event was the Children of Israel Fund which for the past three years has raised money and sends it to the families of children who lost a parent or parents in terrorist attacks.

4)  SKI TRIP PHOTOS POSTED

This past Sunday, the guys were off on their annual waterski trip. Photos can be seen here. Thanks to Rabbi Aaron Kaplan for organizing it, Mrs. Yona Posner for preparing and hosting the BBQ dinner afterwards and to Dr. Berel Polisky for providing breakfast.

5) SIDDURIM UPDATE

The additional Siddurim have arrived. As soon as the bookplates are in they will be installed on the shelves. For those of you wondering where they will fit in, the old-style Hebrew/English Siddurim will move to the left side shelves. We thank Dr. Phil and Ilene Finkel, Rob and Chaya Phillips, and Yossi Pendo for donating these Siddurim.

6) JEWISH ART CALENDAR OFF TO THE PRINTER

The Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie Jewish Art Calendar for 5767 has been put together and was sent off to the printer early this week. We are now in the process of finalizing the mailing list. If you know anyone in Skokie whom you think would appreciate receiving the calendar and is not currently on our mailing list, please provide us with their name and address.

7) “LIVING TORAH” SPONSORS NEEDED

We enjoy the weekly “Living Torah” videos every Sunday. We now have to renew our subscription for the coming year of 5767. In order to do this we need monthly sponsors at $36. If you can sponsor one or more months, please let us know as soon as possible, so we can continue our subscription uninterrupted.

8)BIKUR CHOLIM

Please visit Mark Muller. You can call 847-673-2676 to make up a time. We continue to recite Tehillim for him (Chaim Meir Yaakov Alter ben Pesl) every morning after davening. May he have a Refuah Shelaima u’Krovah!

Some Halachos and Minhagim of Tisha B’Av:

Tisha B’Av

Even pregnant women and nursing mothers should fast. If one has difficulty fasting consult with a competent Rabbi.

Erev Tisha B’Av, Wednesday August

Erev Tisha B'Av, Wednesday August 2, it is prohibited to study Torah (except for sections related to the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash) beginning at 12:56 pm. Tachanun is omitted at Mincha. Seudas hamafsekes (the meal of bread and egg dipped in ash) is eaten individually (i.e. without a mezuman) on a low stool after Mincha, Shir Hamaalos is said in the bentching. Eating is permitted, even after the seudas hamafsekes, until 8:04 pm. Beginning at sunset on Wednesday one may wear only non-leather shoes and sit only on a low stool. We do not offer greetings throughout Tisha B’Av. Mishnayos recited by mourner’s before Kaddish d’Rabanan is the final Mishna of Mesechta Moed Katan.

Maariv

The Paroches and Shulchan and amud coverings are removed. After Shemoneh Esra of Maariv, Kaddish with Tiskabel is said followed by Eicha. After Eicha we recite Atah Kodesh then Kaddish without Tiskabel then Aleinu. It is not our custom to sleep on the floor. Work requiring focused concentration (e.g., gardening, cooking, etc.) and sitting on an ordinary seat is prohibited until midday on Thursday (12:56 pm).

In the morning (as well as throughout the day such as after using the bathroom) we wash only the fingers. Brushing teeth is prohibited.

Shacharis

Omit the brocha “She’asah li kol tzorki”. Tallis and Tefilin are not worn at Shacharis; we do not kiss (or make the brocha on) Tzitzis during Shema, etc. Tachanun and Avinu Malkeinu are not said. After Krias HaTorah we recite Kinos, Ashrei,U’va L’tzion (omit “v’ani zos brisi...”) followed by Kaddish without Tiskabel, then Aleinu. We read Eicha after Shacharis individually.

Mincha

Put on Tallis and Rashi Tefilin, say all three paragraphs of Shema (do not repeat Hashem Elokeichem Emes or kiss tzitzis), the Yom, Ain Kelokeinu, daily and personal Tehilim and Korbonos for Mincha. In Shemoneh Esrai include Nacheim and Aneinu. After Mincha put on Rabeinu Tam Tefilin, recite Shma and Kadesh L.i Be certain to complete this before shkia (8:07 pm). The Fast concludes at 8:46 pm. After Maariv: wash hands in alternating fashion as we do each morning (without a brocha) and rinse out the mouth followed by Kiddush Levana. We do not eat meat or drink wine until midday (12:56 pm) on Friday. In honor of Shabbos laundry may be done immediately after the fast. Haircuts may be taken Friday morning or in the case of urgency even Thursday evening after the fast.

May we merit the fulfillment of the prophecy that these days will be transformed from days of mourning to days of joy NOW!
