Weep for me departed friends,
Cry for me my love,
I shall never see again
The heavens bright above.

On solid ground I took my stand
To challenge earth and sky,
To let us live as we might choose
Without these laws and lies.

Why obey a prophecy that
Has us wander aimlessly,
Amid the sand and baking sun,
Until the day we die?

Was I wrong in what I said?
No longer slaves, but free,
I hoped with you at my command,
With Moses’ power in our hands,
That we could leap our destiny
And shake death’s dark decree.

A crevice formed beneath my feet,
As fear within me swelled,
I felt my body start to sway,
Into the hole I fell.
When Earth began to cease its yawn,
I found myself entombed,

Within this darkened sepulcher
That has become my home.
All around me blackness reigns.
My eyes no longer see
The colors and the shapes of life
That once delighted me.

But in their place another light
Has helped me to perceive
Grey shadows of a different world
Amid G‑d’s mysteries.

My hubris was a grievous sin.
I did not understand
That there are things
That cannot change,
No matter what we say.

Even though you wish to rage,
Remember this, my friends,
When after all our debts are paid,
That G‑d still owns the day.

Weep for me departed friends,
Cry for me my love,
I shall never see again
The heavens bright above.
