Survey: What to do about Weekday Mincha in the Winter

The days are getting shorter and the time for Mincha is getting earlier. In past years around mid-October we switched to Maariv-only at 7:45 pm on Monday through Thursday. This year there is interest in keeping the Mincha Minyan going through the winter. This means that Mincha may be as early as 4:10 for several weeks. If you are interested in being part of this, and/or if you can get your spouse, kid, neighbor, etc. to be part of this, please let us know. We need some sense of who is available and interested if we hope to make a go of it.

Please hit “Reply” right now and tell us if you can participate in this, or if you prefer sticking with the old routine of Maariv-only at 7:45. For that matter you can let us know if you would prefer Maariv only some time other than 7:45 p.m.  Seriously. We do 7:45 because at one point that was convenient for most of the regulars, but people change, times change, schedules change, and maybe it is time to change this, too.

Introduction to Chassidus –The Fourth Course Begins This Week

The next six week Chassidus course with Rabbi Moshe Miller will begin on this Sunday, October 6, 2013, and will meet on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie, 4059 Dempster Street.

This course will focus on the overall topic of “The Purpose of Creation”.

We will trace the origin of the subject to a posuk in Torah; elaborate its meaning, logic and how it is connected with other concepts in Torah and Chassidus; discuss different understandings of the concept by different authorities.

Basic familiarity with Hebrew reading and translating required. This course is ideal for individuals who have some experience with learning Chassidus, whether it is simply attending shiurim at a Shul or a Chabad House, or even yeshiva graduates. Men and women are welcome.

Tuition for this course is $60. Study materials are included, and there will be homework assignments and mini tests so you can monitor your progress and your retention of the material.

Women’s Book Club Meets this Wednesday

All women are invited to discuss the current book, "Souls on Fire", by Elie Wiesel, this Wednesday: October 9, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Carole Cohen, 8550 Keeler in Skokie.

In “Souls on Fire: Portraits and Legends of Hasidic Masters,” Elie Wiesel enters, like an impassioned pilgrim, the universe of Hasidism. "When I am asked about my Jewish affiliation, I define myself as a Hasid,” writes the author. "Hasid I was, Hasid I remain". Yet Souls on Fire is not a simple chronological history of Hasidism, nor is it a comprehensive book on its subject. Event for Women

All women are invited to "From Frazzled to Focused," an evening with Rivka Caroline, on Wednesday, October 16, 7:45 p.m. promptly at Bais Menachem, 2833 W. Howard, Chicago.

There will be a klezmer musical performance by Kol Shira and dancing led by Robin Mallor, as well as the presentation by Mrs. Caroline.

This program is sponsored by Mrs. Shira Malka Walder in honor of her mother, Mrs. Ethel Mallor OB”M whose 14th Yartzeit will be commemorated that evening. Refreshments will be served. Suggested donation: $5

Hashovas Aveidah

A yellow and blue windbreaker/rain coat was taken by mistake from the shul coatroom on the first days of Yom Tov. If you have a similar jacket, please check it and make sure you have the right one and did not mix it up with someone else's at shul. If you did, your coat is waiting for you in Shul. If you return it please let us know so we can notify the owner.
